gvSIG Handbook

The "Welthungerhilfe GIS Starter Package 2.0" includes a pdf-version of the online manual of gvSIG 1.11 available on the gvSIG-homepage. Please note: Some sections are only available in Spanish.

To give you an overview, summaries of the 11 chapters of the manual are provided below.

1.

Introduction

This chapter briefly introduces gvSIG and its project background.

more details on pages 11-13

2.

gvSIG Projects

gvSIG-projects are made up of different document types. There are three types of documents in gvSIG: views, tables and maps.

more details on pages 13-22

3.

Documents

The gvSIG user interface consists of different working areas to manage vector and raster data of your gvSIG projects. The "View"-Window contains the "Table of Contents (ToC)", the "Locator" and the "Display Window".

more details on pages 22-61

4.

Viewing and accessing Data

Different types of cartographic information can be added to a gvSIG-project. A wide range of vector and raster file formats can be loaded.

5.

Editing Tools

There are two types of editing tools: the graphical and alphanumerical editing of layers or features.
Graphical editing allows creating, modifying and deleting vector features. Alphanumerical editing of elements includes the creation, modification and deleting of data associated with the elements using the field calculator.

6.

Analysis and processing Data

The gvSIG "Geoprocessing Tools" offer a series of standard processes for vector layers, e.g. creating new vector information layers based on the spatial relationship of the source layers.

more details on pages 417-470

For raster data the layer functionalities and geographic transformation tools are explained.

7.

Maps

This chapter illustrates how to set up the map (page size and measuring units) as well as inserting the map elements (legend, scale bar, northing, texts) and map exporting options.
